Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda Receives Rave Reviews in NYC
Peterborough, NH(January 11, 2013) — The Metropolitan Opera’s premiere production of Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda opened recently to rave reviews. The Peterborough Players will broadcast The Met: Live in HD’s extraordinary performance of this magnificent opera on Saturday, January 19, 2013, at 1 pm. Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for students.
Mezzo-soprano Joyce Di Donato, one of the world’s most exciting singers, takes on the virtuosic bel canto role of the doomed Mary, Queen of Scots, and sings with “plush richness and aching beauty,” according to a New York Times review. Director David McVicar turns to the second opera of Donizetti’s Tudor trilogy, which explores regal characters at fateful moments of their lives. Elza van den Heever sings the role of Elizabeth I in her Met debut, and Maurizio Benini conducts. The New York Times review also states “It was hard to imagine a better New Year’s Eve gift to opera lovers than this musically splendid and intensely dramatic performance.”
Delicious savory and sweet “Opera Bites” from Sunflowers Restaurant and Catering are available pre-show and during intermissions.
